Belize

Navigate the tabs below to learn everything you need to know about hiring an employee in Belize

Minimum Wage Requirements

The minimum wage for 2026 is BZ$5.00 per hour. For a full-time employee working 45 hours per week, the monthly minimum wage is BZ$975.00. There is no sector-specific minimum wage.

Individual Income Tax

The individual income tax rate is 25% on income earnings exceeding BZ$29,000. Persons earning below this threshold are eligible for personal relief.

Payroll Cost

Employer contributions vary by type (Social Security and PAYE withholding).

Social Security: Ranges from 55%–81% of total weekly contribution (or BZ$4.47–BZ$28.60 depending on earnings level).

PAYE (Pay As You Earn Tax): Employers withhold up to 25% of an employee's taxable income (on earnings exceeding BZ$29,000) and remit to the Belize Tax Service Department — this is a withholding from employee salary, not an employer contribution cost.

Overtime Pay & Maximum Hours

Standard working hours are a maximum of 45 hours per week. Employees typically work 8 hours per day, with the exception of 5 hours on Saturdays. The standard working week may be Monday to Friday or Monday to Saturday, depending on company policy.

Overtime payment is mandatory. Overtime is compensated as follows:

  • Standard overtime (working days beyond 45 hours/week) — 150% (1.5x) of regular hourly rate
  • Weekends — 150% (1.5x) of regular hourly rate
  • Most public holidays — 150% (1.5x) of regular hourly rate
  • Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday — 200% (2.0x) of regular hourly rate

At the employee's request, overtime may be compensated with equivalent time off instead of increased pay. Overtime must be authorized by the employer and submitted with the employee's written consent. Proof of overtime may be documented through forms signed either digitally or in wet ink.
