The Challenge
Five days a month, and a spreadsheet that kept breaking
D4U Immigration helps people live, work, and invest in the United States, Europe, and the UAE. It began when its founder, a Brazilian businessman, was denied a US visa several times, read the process himself, reapplied, and was approved. He started helping friends, then family, and it became a business. Today every application is reviewed by specialists before submission, and the firm has supported more than 18,000 people.
Growth was fast: five people, then ten, then 150 in a few years. Payroll was assembled alongside it.
"The process of payroll and HR was put together as we went. You don't have a whole HR department when you have five people." — Marcelo Silva, HR Manager, D4U Immigration
A US provider covered domestic payroll. Everyone outside the US was paid by money transfer, with no formal process behind it. Month-end arrived as emails from every manager and director, which Silva pulled together by hand in a spreadsheet.
"It was all programmed into the cells. If I hit the wrong key, I'd lose the whole thing and have to start over." — Marcelo Silva, HR Manager, D4U Immigration
A cycle took three to five days, and the file sometimes broke partway through, sending him back to the emails to begin again.
"I was completely absorbed in payroll for five days at a time. Nobody could reach me, and that's not good business practice." — Marcelo Silva, HR Manager, D4U Immigration
The Solution
One database for every worker, in every country
Silva wanted a single place to run a report across US and international workers, and made the case to leadership on risk rather than cost.
"I said, look how much money we could be losing because we don't have a trustworthy payroll platform. You can't be a big company without one." — Marcelo Silva, HR Manager, D4U Immigration
Deel now runs both sides of the payroll. US employees and contractors sit alongside workers in Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Italy, and Spain, in one system Silva reconciles directly against the company's bank.
"Deel is my database. Whatever Deel takes out of the bank has to match what I have here. If that works, we know it's right." — Marcelo Silva, HR Manager, D4U Immigration
Compliance stopped being something Silva has to think about. Where international workers once had no payroll behind them at all, everyone is now on a compliant payroll, with their own verified records held in one place.
The Results
Five days to five minutes
After exploring Deel's API in the sandbox, Silva hired a software engineer to build an internal finance system and connect the two. Managers now submit month-end figures into that system instead of emailing them, and payments flow straight through.
"My payroll literally takes five minutes. I'm closing contractors today, and I haven't even started, because it's going to be a click." — Marcelo Silva, HR Manager, D4U Immigration
The questions stopped
People used to be paid a single lump sum labelled "commission," with nothing to show what it covered. The calls and emails started as soon as payments landed, and answering them took up much of Silva's week. Now every case a person has worked on appears as its own line on the payslip, inside one combined payment.
"I no longer get all those questions now. Our team knows what they got paid for." — Marcelo Silva, HR Manager, D4U Immigration
That has changed what Silva's month looks like. The days he once spent unreachable are now available to the people he supports, and he has extended the automation further, using AI to pull new hire details out of his inbox and set them up in Deel.
What's next
Deel is now part of how D4U runs rather than a service it buys. The company's finance system is built around the API, onboarding flows through the platform, and Silva is still finding new parts of the process to automate as the firm grows into new markets.
"It does everything I need. If there's a better system, I don't want to know, because I don't need it." — Marcelo Silva, HR Manager, D4U Immigration
I'm Deel's biggest advocate. I know what my struggle was, and I know there are people out there going through the same thing. I tell my peers because I want their life to get better.
