Comparing the best Canadian payroll software

Run Canadian and global payroll with Deel

Key takeaways

  1. Canadian payroll compliance requires managing Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) remittances, T4 employment income slips, and Quebec-specific deductions that differ by province.

  2. Companies expanding globally need payroll software that handles Canadian domestic compliance and international hiring in one platform.

  3. You can run payroll for Canadian workers in Deel, with automation and expert support available based on your countries and operational needs.

Canadian payroll is not a simple calculation. A business operating across British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec simultaneously manages three different provincial tax regimes, separate workers' compensation rules, and an entirely separate remittance authority in Revenu Québec for Quebec employees.

Software errors in this context can lead to late-remittance penalties from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), missed T4 slip deadlines, and additional time spent correcting year-end filings.

The stakes rise further for mid-market businesses adding international headcount. A payroll tool that handles Ontario perfectly but has no answer for a contractor in Brazil or an employee hired in the UK without a local entity creates a two-system problem that compounds as the team scales. Finance and HR teams end up maintaining parallel records across disconnected platforms, which means double data entry, reconciliation delays, and more opportunities for compliance errors.

This guide reviews the seven best Canadian payroll software options in 2026, covering CRA compliance depth, Quebec support, global payroll capability, and pricing. A side-by-side comparison table follows all seven reviews to help businesses compare each tool against their payroll requirements.

What to look for in Canadian payroll software

Canadian payroll rules differ from US payroll rules in several important ways. Every platform on a Canadian business's shortlist should handle all of the following:

CRA remittances

The CRA payroll guide requires employers to remit source deductions (Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions, Employment Insurance (EI) premiums, and income tax) on a schedule determined by average monthly withholding amounts.

Accelerated remitters on Threshold 2 must remit within three business days of payroll. Platforms that only calculate remittances but leave the actual payment to the employer carry more operational risk than ones that remit on the employer's behalf. Missed remittances attract penalties starting at 3% and rising to 20% for repeated failures.

T4 and Record of Employment (ROE) automation

T4 slips must reach the CRA by the last day of February each year. When employment is interrupted, a Record of Employment (ROE) must be filed with Service Canada within five calendar days. Software that automates both generation and e-filing reduces the compliance penalty risk associated with ROE deadlines, which are easy to miss during periods of high turnover.

Multi-provincial support

Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories, each with its own income tax rates, statutory holiday rules, and workers' compensation boards. A platform with genuine multi-province support calculates different payroll rules by province of employment rather than applying federal deductions uniformly. Employer Health Tax obligations differ between Ontario and British Columbia, and platforms that handle this automatically reduce meaningful admin work.

Quebec-specific requirements

Quebec has its own payroll framework. Employees there contribute to the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) instead of CPP, and to the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) instead of the federal EI parental-benefit top-up. Year-end slips are RL-1s filed with Revenu Québec, not T4s filed only with the CRA.

Businesses with Quebec employees should confirm that the software supports QPP, QPIP, RL-1 filing, and Revenu Québec remittances before committing to a platform. For a detailed breakdown of how Canadian payroll taxes work across provinces, that primer covers the key distinctions.

Global payroll capability

Teams hiring internationally need a platform that extends beyond Canadian borders, whether through owned-entity payroll in other countries or Employer of Record (EOR) services for markets where the company does not yet have a legal entity. This dimension separates tools built purely for Canadian domestic use from platforms that can scale with a global workforce.

Quebec payroll: key differences

Quebec employees contribute to QPP (not CPP) and QPIP (not federal EI parental benefits), and receive RL-1 slips filed with Revenu Québec rather than T4s filed only with the CRA. Six of the seven tools on this list support Quebec-specific payroll requirements; Knit People does not process Quebec payroll.

How we chose these tools

Every tool on this list was evaluated against the Canadian payroll requirements above, with emphasis on CRA remittance automation, Quebec compliance depth, and whether the platform can grow with a team adding international headcount.

Pricing transparency was also weighted. Tools with published rates were compared against quote-based platforms on equivalent team sizes where data was available. Each was assessed against verified feature documentation from official vendor sources and confirmed product capability information.

Deel Payroll

Deel Payroll is one global payroll platform for running payroll across 130+ countries, including Canadian payroll. You work with one product and one accountable partner. How much of each cycle your team runs, and how much Deel’s payroll experts support, depends on the country and the help you need.

How does Deel use AI in payroll?

Deel uses AI and automation to reduce repetitive payroll preparation and surface potential issues earlier. AI-assisted workflows help structure your payroll inputs, run readiness checks and flag unusual changes before you submit a cycle. The payroll engine calculates pay, and your team reviews and approves each run. Watch the video beloe to learn more about how Deel uses AI in payroll.

What does Deel Payroll handle for Canadian compliance?

Deel automates CRA source deduction calculations and remittances using your CRA tax identification number. You can process payroll in Canadian dollars on weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly pay schedules across supported provinces.

At year-end, Deel prepares, e-files and distributes your T4 slips and summaries with the CRA. For Quebec employees, Deel generates and e-files RL-1 slips with Revenu Québec, and handles QPP contributions and QPIP premiums across pay cycles. ROE workflows are supported, including generation, adjustment and Service Canada submission, for employees with an interruption of earnings.

Deel handles your CRA remittances and specified year-end filings directly. Some provincial obligations, such as Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and Ontario’s Employer Health Tax (EHT) returns, remain your filing responsibility, though Deel can assist with the associated payments. This is standard for most Canadian payroll providers.

We needed a platform that could grow with us—not just handle Canadian payroll, but support our US employees, our international contractors, and whatever comes next. Rippling couldn't do that, and we knew we were outgrowing it.

People Business Partner, A Parent Media

Why choose an all-in-one platform for payroll?

Deel is more than a hiring tool. Payroll sits on the same platform as the rest of your global workforce operations, so you don’t stitch together separate vendors as you grow.

  • Hiring and employment: Pay employees through your Canadian entity with Deel Payroll, employ workers in other countries through Deel’s separate EOR solution without a local legal entity, or pay international independent contractors through Deel’s Contractor solution.

  • Benefits: With Deel Benefits Admin, deductions flow into payroll without manual reconciliation.

  • HR and time tracking: Manage the employee lifecycle and track and sync approved hours directly into payroll.

  • Global mobility: Deel supports visa, immigration and relocation needs as your people move between countries. [CONFIRM product scope and name]

  • Equipment provisioning and IT: Deel IT supports equipment and device management for your team, wherever they work.

  • Payments: Deel Treasury, multi-currency payouts and expense management connect to payroll.

Pricing: Deel Payroll pricing starts at $29 per employee per month

ADP Workforce Now

ADP Workforce Now supports Canadian payroll across all 10 provinces and 3 territories. Its core payroll functions include CRA remittances, T4 and RL-1 generation, and ROE e-filing. Quebec payroll is supported, including QPP, QPIP, and Revenu Québec remittances, and payroll documents and employee self-service are available in English and French.

Employees in different provinces, such as Ontario, Alberta, and Quebec, can be paid from the same system, with province-specific deductions and year-end slips for each jurisdiction. Time and attendance, benefits administration, and HR data sit in a single database alongside payroll.

The platform’s rule engine is designed for layered pay calculations, such as multiple bargaining groups, a mix of salaried and hourly roles, or variable schedules. This makes it a common choice in industries like retail, construction, and healthcare, where pay structures tend to be more complex.

For payroll outside Canada, ADP Workforce Now uses ADP Celergo, a global payroll network covering 140+ countries through local in-country partners. This is a different delivery model from ADP’s own payroll processing in the US and Canada. For a comparison of how Deel and ADP approach global payroll, see the Deel vs. ADP global payroll comparison.

Pricing: Quote-based. Varies by employee count and modules selected.

Dayforce

Dayforce (formerly Ceridian Dayforce) was founded in Toronto and has a long history in Canadian payroll. Its continuous calculation engine recalculates gross-to-net pay as time and attendance data comes in, so errors such as an incorrect QPP deduction can be identified before remittance rather than corrected afterward.

The platform covers federal, provincial, and territorial payroll requirements. It handles provincial and territorial tax deductions, CRA and Revenu Québec remittances, and e-files T4, T4A, RL-1, RL-2, and ROE documents with government authorities. For Quebec, it supports QPP, QPIP, and CNESST compliance, as well as cases where an employee works in one province and lives in another. Pay statements and self-service portals are available in English and French.

Multi-province payroll, shift management, benefits administration, and HCM data share a single employee record. US payroll is also supported on the same platform, so cross-border US-Canada teams can generate T4 and W-2 forms from one employee record. For a comparison of Dayforce and Deel’s global payroll capabilities, see Deel’s Dayforce comparison.

Dayforce is aimed at organizations with 500+ employees. For smaller businesses, Powerpay by Dayforce is the company’s SMB-focused product, with a published All-In plan starting at CA$25/mo + CA$5/employee.

Pricing: Quote-based for Dayforce. Powerpay All-In plan starts at CA$25/mo + CA$5/employee.

QuickBooks Online Payroll

For businesses that already use QuickBooks Online (QBO) for accounting, QuickBooks Payroll may be a convenient option that keeps payroll and bookkeeping in one system. Payroll entries post directly to the QBO general ledger after each pay run, with no export, no sync, and no manual journal entries. A CPA or bookkeeper can review payroll data, reconcile remittances, and prepare T4 slips without logging into a second system.

On the compliance side, QuickBooks Payroll calculates CPP, EI, and federal and provincial income tax across all 13 Canadian provinces and territories, and e-files payroll taxes with the CRA or Revenu Québec. T4 slips are generated and filed electronically. ROEs can be initiated from within QBO when employment is interrupted. Quebec payroll is supported, including QPP, QPIP, and RL-1 generation and filing.

One important distinction: CRA remittances are calculated within QBO, but the employer or CPA must initiate the actual payment. That differs from platforms like Wagepoint or Dayforce that remit on the employer's behalf. For businesses comfortable managing that step manually or through their accountant, it's not a problem. For teams that want hands-off remittance handling, it is a meaningful limitation.

Global payroll and international hiring are not native capabilities. Teams growing beyond Canada will need a separate solution for non-Canadian workers.

For teams that keep QBO as their accounting system while hiring or paying workers outside Canada, Deel offers a QuickBooks integration built by Deel. It syncs workforce cost data from Deel Payroll, EOR, and Contractor to the QBO general ledger, including vendor records, EOR and contractor invoices, invoice PDFs, and bill payments.

Teams can map entries to specific GL accounts, enable multi-currency settings, and use automatic vendor matching by email address, so international workforce costs appear in the same books as domestic payroll.

Pricing: Core plan pricing varies. Bundled packages with QBO EasyStart start at CA$3/mo + CA$5/employee (promotional) and scale by plan tier. Standalone payroll pricing is available at checkout.

Wagepoint

Wagepoint calculates CPP and QPP contributions, EI and QPIP deductions, and federal and provincial income tax across all provinces and territories, including Quebec. CRA source deductions are remitted on the employer's behalf. T4 and T4A slips, RL-1 slips for Quebec employees, and ROE submissions are included in the base subscription, with no separate year-end fees and no contracts.

Wagepoint integrates with QuickBooks Online, Xero, and FreshBooks for accounting sync. HR modules, benefits administration, and time tracking are not part of the core payroll product; they're available as separate add-ons or through third-party integrations. This suits teams that only need payroll, while teams that want HR, time tracking, and payroll in a single platform may need additional tools.

Wagepoint is Canada-only, so companies with international workers will need a separate platform for non-Canadian payroll.

Pricing: Solo CA$20/mo + CA$4/employee. Unlimited CA$40/mo + CA$6/employee. All prices in CAD.

How EDGLRD assembles and pays global teams at speed with Deel

EDGLRD is a Miami-based creative agency founded by film director Harmony Korine. Hanna Azarenko, Head of HR, needed a payroll platform that could handle international complexity without requiring her to become a global employment lawyer.

Deel Payroll changed the workflow entirely. What had previously been a multi-step, unintuitive process became a quick review-and-submit cycle.

"Hiring someone in Canada or Brazil was almost the same as hiring someone in the US," says Azarenko. "Deel took care of all the compliance."

As EDGLRD grows and its global footprint expands, the infrastructure is already in place to support it. The company is onboarding onto Deel's PEO solution and plans to activate Deel ATS—consolidating recruiting into the same platform that already manages payroll, HR, and contractor operations.

"It basically takes me a few minutes to check payroll before I submit it. I just check if every person has all the deductions and the salary is correct, and I submit it. The team processes it and we pay automatically." — Hanna Azarenko, Head of HR, EDGLRD

Payworks

Payworks is a payroll and workforce management platform that reports serving more than 40,000 businesses across the country. Payworks calculates and remits CRA and Revenu Québec source deductions, handles T4 and ROE submissions, and supports multi-provincial payroll across all Canadian jurisdictions, including Quebec. A managed payroll option is available for teams that want to outsource payroll processing rather than run it themselves. Employee data is hosted in Canada across two domestic data centers, which may be relevant for businesses with data residency requirements.

Beyond payroll, the platform includes time and attendance tracking, absence management, HR record management, and benefits administration, connected through a shared employee database so that data entered in HR carries over to payroll.

Payworks does not support US or global payroll, so companies with international teams will need a separate solution for non-Canadian employees. For a broader look at how Payworks and similar platforms compare for growing businesses, the best payroll software for medium businesses guide covers the key trade-offs.

Pricing: Per-run pricing model (approximately CA$20.90/run + CA$2.10/employee). Final pricing requires a custom quote based on employee count and pay frequency.

Knit People

Knit People is a payroll and HR platform built for Canadian small and growing businesses, and it is commonly used by accountants and bookkeepers who run payroll for multiple clients. Payroll calculations run automatically across provinces and territories, CRA source deductions are remitted on the employer's behalf, and T4s and ROEs are generated and filed from within the platform. All plans include unlimited payroll runs, so pricing does not change for teams that pay weekly or run off-cycle payrolls.

The Complete plan adds WCB, WSIB, and EHT remittances, payroll approval workflows, e-signatures, full-cycle time-off administration, and performance management. Time and attendance (clock-in, digital timesheets, and automatic overtime calculations) is available as an add-on at $4 per person per month. Knit integrates with QuickBooks Online and Xero, and its Concierge tier offers fully managed payroll with access to certified payroll specialists and CRA audit support.

Knit does not process Quebec payroll, according to its own comparison materials, so businesses with Quebec employees will need a separate provider for RL-1 slips and Revenu Québec remittances. Knit also does not offer garnishment administration or T4As for contractors. For hiring outside Canada, Knit offers an employer of record add-on priced at 8% of total monthly processed payroll.

Pricing: Lite $40/mo + $6/employee. Complete $50/mo + $8/employee. Concierge requires a custom quote. A 30-day free trial is available.
